“We Ride For Those Who Died”

Every year hundreds of law enforcement officers are killed in the line of duty. Nothing can ever replace them to their family and friends. The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial (NLEOM), in Washington, DC allows for their memories to live on and honors these men and women forever. The Police Unity Tour Incorporated was formed in 1997 by a group of law enforcement officers from New Jersey, who rode their bicycles from Florham Park, New Jersey to Washington, DC. The idea of Patrick Montoure, now an Assistant Police Chief from Florham Park, NJ, was to raise donations for the Memorial. Never in his wildest dreams did he envision what this was to become. For the last nine years, police officers nationwide have ridden the 300 plus mile trip, with the purpose of raising awareness and financial support for the NLEOM. The Police Unity Tour has grown from 18 members to nearly 800 members, nationwide, who will be making the trip this year. Because of the Police Unity Tour’s efforts, in nine years $2.2 Million has been donated to the memorial, making the Police Unity Tour Incorporated the single largest supporter of the NLEOM. The goal for the Police Unity Tour is to raise $5 million over the next 4 years. These riders then act as emissaries of the Memorial by greeting and escorting the surviving family members at the annual Candlelight Vigil in Washington.

This year, 3 Officers got together and decided that they would like to carry forward the dream of Pat Montoure and do something extraordinary. These 3 Officers recruited an additional 9 Officers willing to donate their time and efforts to accomplish something difficult yet very special. This dream will become a reality on April 15th when these 12 Officers leave Los Angeles en-route to Ground Zero in NYC, riding their bicycles in Honor of all Police Officers who have paid the ultimate sacrifice. Carried during this ride will be a Specially engraved memorial police baton honoring the Officers.
Upon arrival in Washington, DC on May 12th this baton will be presented to Craig Floyd, Director of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial. In their effort to raise awareness, coast to coast, they will be holding a memorial service in each State they pass through. During these services, they will present an identical memorial baton to the State / Local Police Department hosting the ceremony. Their goal in this endeavor is to raise at least $1000 in each State they ride through. The money they raise will all go to the NLEOM. They welcome, and encourage, any members of the Law enforcement community to ride with them as they travel through your State. For more information on the Police Unity Tour please visit:

Hi Nancy & Bruce, Thank you so much for the call. I'm so sorry I missed it. Unfortunately, we couldn't make it to Albuquerque this weekend physically but I am with you in spirit: struggling with the Jemez and Sangre de Cristo montanas, loving the sunshine, and the countryside.(Too bad you didn't have your breakday in Albuquerque, you could have pedaled 60 miles north to Santa Fe:) )You guys are doing a courageous tough job. I'm thinking about you; when we do our hilly training rides, we're saying Nancy and Bruce are riding harder than this everyday... Your Unity Ride is a remarkable endeavor of a lifetime. You must regale us with every experience when you return. Ride safely. Va con dios (as they say in NM) Great job on the blog. See you soon.
