Day #14 Sallisaw, Oklahoma to Conway, Arkansas

Memorial Ceremony at Conway, Arkansas PD

Today 2 of OHP’s finest and Officer Murray of the Sallisaw PD started us out with an escort starting at 7:10am. The first group (Craig, Fred, SB and Steve) headed out on an absolutely beautiful morning in Oklahoma, clear sunny sky’s with little wind. The shades of green in this countryside are stunning. Our entire team then stopped for a photo at the Arkansas border. They finished strong on a hill.

Group 2 (Bruce, Nancy, Tony and Dawn) geared up and rode directly into some very tough hills. Up they went encouraging each along the way. It is at the toughest times like these that all of us recognize what and Honor it is to be doing this ride. The tougher it gets the more worthwhile it seems. We all feel that the one thing we can do, and will do is to never forget our fallen fellow Officers.

Group 3 (Pat, Rob, Dennis and Kevin) started off and the terrain was FLAT, FLAT, FLAT. We really enjoyed a day without any hills to speak of. The weather was perfect with a temp of 65 degrees. We went by some beautiful lakes before any easy climb into Conway.
Upon group 3's arrival at the Conway City line we were met by two of their police cars and a contingent of 6 bicycle patrol Officers who escorted our team to the motel. It is truly inspiring when our brother Officers come out in force to support us in our endevour. We are deeply indebted to them.

At 7:00pm a Memorial Ceremony was held at the Conway Police Department. The event was attended by a large contingent of their bicycle officers, and was conducted by Kevin Hoffman.
The Departmental Chaplain, Rev. George Andrews gave the benediction. Craig White spoke on the mission of the Unity Tour and made the presentation of the baton to Conway Police Major Benny Battles. Dennis read the roll call of heroes and the ceremony was concluded with the playing of Taps. Conway Police Department has lost 3 Officers in the line of duty. After the ceremony a reception was held at the Department with their Officers extending thier hospitality in a most gracious manner. Special thanks go to Pamela Sweeney of the Police Department for all of her hard work in making this ceremony a success.
